meta tag

In short and in plain language

A meta tag is a note in the code of a web page.

Visitors do not see it directly. Browsers and search engines read it. It can hold a short description of the page, for example.

Some services also use such a note to check who owns the site.

Definition
A meta tag is an element in the head section of a web page that visitors do not see directly. Browsers, search engines and other services read information from it, such as a description, the character set or indexing instructions. Some services also use a meta tag to verify a website.
